When one wants instant gratification, there’s nothing as efficient as watching a little horror in several horror movie streaming services.

It’s a very comfortable, laid-back way of satisfying our horror wishes. Some of them may lack a bit in the horror choices they offer, but the instantaneous quality of delivery makes them a must-have tool in the arsenal of a horror lover.

Obviously, not every horror movie streaming service is Shudder and because of that, the general ones are of limited interest to horror fans. But the choice in the ones that offer a variety of genres keeps on growing so they deserve to be known too. I trust this site will help you in your fear venture in a down-to-earth way, or if nothing else that it will entertain and engage you. Focus only on the best horror movies circulating on video streaming services.

I curate the items in this category to cater to any horror fan that has an active passion for or exhibits major enthusiasm in exploring the horror genre through video streaming services

Now, while some streaming services have user interfaces that could be improved, that is unimportant compared to the value they give.

Let’s focus for a moment on Netflix as an example of what I’m saying. Unless you know what to watch, finding something worth watching takes time, clicks, and patience.

If you know how an interface could be improved and if you struggle to find a good movie to watch you know what I mean.

One thing is using Netflix on a TV. I guess the motive is to have only one minimalistic interface that is the same for all devices. Still, it’s an imposition that doesn’t give power to the user.

When accessed from a computer the site feels like an application, even when accessing it with a desktop computer. The subtle, minimalist interface wastes the opportunity to make, at least the desktop version of the website, to have more functionalities and be of more value to the user.

I think I see why it is not this way. Because they think it’s more valuable that way, to have a single version for all devices that achieves its objective without frills and thus without additional costs involved. That kind of exempts them from having to have written copy on the site other than the minimum necessary of text.

What’s more, no need to create taxonomy trees, advanced search features, or even informational pages where they tell exactly what they’re going to release and when, and what are they going to cancel.

We are 8711

8711 is Netflix’s code for horror. You may argue that there’s a way of refining searches on Netflix, using the so-called genre “secret codes”.

You access Netflix’s genre pages by inputting this URL in your browser:

www.netflix.com/browse/genre/8711

Where you enter the specific code, instead of 8711 the chief category, after the last forward slash. Even if it works, and it’s useful, you can’t deny that it is inelegant for the platform and a little hassle for the user.

Shock Depot is Here to Help

I think that due to the lack of detailed information about the streaming services catalogs, on the sites themselves, a resource where one can be informed about this was needed.

Curating horror things from video streaming services may sound counter-intuitive. One can think that there’s no point in curating things that due to licensing deals aren’t permanent. Still, licensed movies endure beyond the circulating time on platforms that offer them.

Hopefully with a useful amount of time in advance. If you use newsreaders, you can register to receive horror video streamers RSS updates as soon as I post them. Otherwise, you can register on the website and in this way automatically join the mailing list. You can even join the mailing list only, without the need to join the site. I think that due to the lack of detailed information about the streamers’ catalogs, on the sites themselves, a resource where one can be informed about this was needed.

There are many ways on the internet to be informed of the releases and pullouts from video streaming services, but there isn’t one website, YouTube channel, or similar that is dedicated exclusively to horror on streaming services that I could find.

Best VoDs for Horror Fans

In my experience, of the list at the top of this page, at least half a dozen VoD streaming services are useful for horror fans.

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video probably has the largest offering of horror movies of any VoD, even more than Shudder or Tubi, I think. There’s a catch, though. An APV membership doesn’t entitle you to watch everything that’s on the platform. The business model of APV works through micro-transactions. While there are tons of free horror movies to watch, there are a ton of others that you need to either rent or buy to be able to access.

HBO Max/HBO GO

What I learned about HBO is that if in any given month, they want to be at the top of the list of new horror VoD releases, licensing, and premieres, then they can do it just fine and release new (at least for the platform) items at a scale that rivals Shudder.

Netflix

Netflix is a generalist VoD, but still, I believe that’s a must-have. If you’re a horror fan and don’t know anything about using Netflix for horror entertainment because you never even used a trial account for some reason, then you’re making a disservice to not just yourself but the horror community at large.

My case of Netflix use for horror entertainment. In the past, when I didn’t use VoDs I had seasons in which I was crazy about Asian horror. Still, those seasons never were something permanent. I watched my fair quantity of Asian horror movies from at least half a dozen different Asian countries, but they never became a staple like American and British ones are for me.

These days, I must force myself to watch Asian horror movies, and I ended up choosing Friday nights for that purpose, so as to not forget to stay watching them constantly, otherwise I easily forget them. It may be they don’t interest me as much as they did ten years ago, but in the case of Netflix releasing them (which they do constantly), I most always watch them. A drawback of Netflix is that they may not release a large quantity of horror new items each month, but their horror (movies, series, shorts) catalog’s size and the ease the use make up for that.

Tubi

Tubi is a free service with a massive offering of movies. I haven’t counted everything they have to offer for horror fans, but in quantity, to make an educated guess, I reckon they are trying to be at the height of Shudder, if not in quality, at least in quantity.

Besides the fact that in some countries Tubi has commercial breaks, another gripe I think a horror fan could end up having with Tubi, if at all, is the quality of the movies. Yes, Tubi has hundreds of horror movies, but many are C and I dare say even D grade fare. On the positive side, I think Tubi is heaven for a fan of cult classics, thus very worthy of checking it out, and if know English, or at least can read English subtitles (the movies are in English, and they have the option of enabling English subtitles), there’s no excuse not to use it, since it’s free.

Shudder

Fortunately, horror fans have a streaming service integrally dedicated to horror like Shudder. My acquaintance with Shudder is through checking, each month at the start of the month, what they’re releasing.

I think that even if they’re a wholly horror-dedicated service, where Shudder shines is, more than in whatever they bring to the platform from outside, in their original programs and productions.

I clarify that I haven’t watched a single minute of Shudder on the site. I’ve seen trailers and one (I think) movie that they produced, but I didn’t use the service yet. Still, what I found every month in the list of their new items is that they curate and program horror entertainment neatly and exquisitely.

Common Issues when Watching VoD Streams

Platform Denial of Service

Seen by me on HBO GO

Denial of service and I’m not talking about DoS attacks, happens when you want to watch something in a streamer and the content simply refuses to play. Not much on your side to do when this happens. Other than giving up and returning the next day, I can’t think of any better solution. If it upsets you, then by all means contact the service’s customer support.

Low Volume Audio Output

Seen by me on Netflix

A strange issue is the counter-intuitiveness of Netflix’s low volume. I was accustomed to watching movies with the volume rather high. It was strange when Netflix didn’t deliver the depth of volume I wanted on Windows. I searched for a solution and found out that you need to:

  1. Open Sound
  2. Go to your speakers, one-click to highlight them
  3. Click the ‘properties’ button in the lower right extreme of the window
  4. Speakers properties open, navigate to the enhancements tab
  5. Scroll down the list until you find ‘Loudness Equalization’
  6. Tick ‘Loudness Equalization’, to enable it
  7. Click ‘Apply’ and ‘Ok’.

Kind of a hassle, but Netflix volume after that was acceptable. Still, it comes with an undesirable trade-off. Now, I say this is counter-intuitive, because not only you have to find the way to do it by searching the web, but also because, once you do it, something weird happens. While now Netflix’s volume is higher and decent, you’ll notice that the volume on other audio and video applications is actually lower than was before activating ‘Loudness Equalization’.

Buffering

As Seen by me on any

Very common issue. It may happen due to a few different reasons I know of:

Your internet Connection Sucks

As of now, in the second quarter of 2021, the minimum bandwidth to stream HD content is 40 megabits. If you have buffering issues (which theoretically you shouldn’t have) when watching a streaming service like Netflix, verify that your internet connection is at least 40 megabits.

Your Wi-Fi Connection or your Networking Options are Misconfigured

If you’re experiencing issues on a Wi-Fi connection, the first thing you need to check is that in the configuration of your router, or cable-modem, internet station, or modem-router the Wi-Fi mode is set to the newest possible version of the Wi-Fi networking protocol, which as of this writing is Wi-Fi 6E/802.11ax. You don’t need to know much about your Wi-Fi connection, other than it has to be at least Wi-Fi 4/802.11n for better transmission speed. If you check it and find out that your Wi-Fi connection is set to a version lower than 802.11n, instead of an n, in the end, the version number has a ‘g’, an ‘a’ or a ‘b’, then you are using a virtually obsolete Wi-Fi mode and that’s why you’re having problems streaming video content. Also, and this is very important if you find that your router can handle Wi-Fi 4 or higher, check that the mode is set to use only n protocol because some routers come with multi-modes that broadcast in more than one mode at the same time. To have it set to one of those multi-protocol modes makes your wireless network as good as the slowest mode in the multi-mode mode only.

VoDs Brightness, Contrast, and Gamma Issues

Seen by me on Netflix, HBO GO

This issue I think is more experience-breaking than the previous one of low volume. It is not cool to just lie down after a long day at work to relax watching a show and the image of what we picked is so dark, that in slightly lit scenes we can’t see anything other than a vague outline of what’s happening on screen.

There may be many reasons why this happens, but it did hit me when I upgraded my computer’s video card. I remembered that with previous video cards if I had this trouble, I simply calibrated the image with the monitor controls and that it was better than to do it by software because it would work for not just the operating system at hand, but for any secondary or tertiary one, I had installed.

Now, when I last upgraded, I experienced this issue, and even turning the monitor’s brightness up, the image in both HBO and Netflix, in dark scenes, didn’t achieve a satisfying level of brightness. The way I fixed this problem was by manipulating the desktop color settings in the video card’s configuration program, using the brightness, contrast, and gamma sliders until I achieved the desired image quality.

Explanation of this Area’s Sections

Horror on Streaming Services Reviews

Reviews of movies, series, programs, shorts, or any other audiovisual media offered by the VoDs that carry horror items. Even the services themselves. You can review any of the streaming services you use to placate your horror sweet tooth in this section. But wait, if you plan to make a list of streaming services with a mini-review for each, that content should go in the next section. If your review is of a single VoD then post it here.

Horror Movies Streaming Services Lists

Curated lists of horror items that are currently available on streaming services. The article must have a photograph or image for each item on the list. Each item must be an h2 subheading. Please write the mini-review below the still of each item as three or more paragraphs of 2-3 lines each.

Horror Movies Streaming Services Articles

Long pieces of prose exploring horror on streaming services that aren’t reviews or lists, or every article format that won’t fit the other two descriptions. A few of the content formats you can write for us that we’d love to feature on this particular area of the website: Case Studies: if you think a review is too short when you want to go over the experience of using a certain streamer to watch horror media, then write a case study. It can be from 500 to 1500 words, but please make it at least 600 words. Case Study Template

  1. TITLE: don’t make it too long
  2. BRIEF: summary of the case study
  3. INTRO: information about you/your outfit
  4. PROBLEMS AND PAINS: issues you had as related to VoD / streamers
  5. SOLUTION: how you solved the issues and how your case became worthy of sharing it with others

Essays: when you want to contest the points of view of others about the interpretation or meaning of a media offered on VoDs. If you know how to write an essay, because you learned or self-taught yourself how, then go ahead, otherwise learn how to make one (any format for the essay will do) before writing it, because this is a rather complex format. Features: if you want to write in a more free-form style, then write an expanded piece of content. Write a feature of around 3500 words. If you had a peak experience or some other remarkable experience when watching horror on streaming services, then please use this format.

General Information about Shock Depot

This website was developed thinking of the end-user as the lead. We want to offer a venue in which any horror fans can make their voice heard.

Each content on this website can be rated. Remember to rate the item the content is reviewing or talking about, not the content itself.

When you are crazy about any of the horror niches covered on this website, it’s a great resource to have a laser-focused knowledge center like the horror silos here.

At this moment, while you’re reading this, you’re standing at the top of the Horror on VoD silo. You’ll notice that on this page, you still can see the main menu with each silo, but if you navigate away clicking any of this silo’s content the main menu changes.

That’s because as you drill down the categories tree you get deeper into the silo. Beyond the obvious organizational benefits, this way of grouping content gives, there are logical and technical reasons for that kind of site architecture.

Also, there are reasons, for those feeding content to a silo, to be focused and not mix topics, themes, and terms from other silos in the content that’s contributed to a specific one.

In a way, dividing horror into a handful of verticals like it’s done on this website divides the site into five smaller branches, but as this site evolves, and it becomes a horror content portal, the relative disconnection between niches makes sense.

If I’m interested only in watching horror on streaming services, then why should I not be tagged for that, and that only, and not require to go through a lot of other horror sub-niches I don’t care about?

User Experience Benefits

To contribute content to a website shouldn’t be a hassle or an onboarding process in which the user is tested as in a similar way students are tested to pass an examination.

Because of this all-inclusive approach, you don’t even need to register on the website to submit content. Just go to the Content Contribution page and post away!

Note About Sourced Media

A big thank you to the photo and image resource-sharing community is in order. The images and on this website (most of them) have been sourced from sites where the original uploaders shared them; by giving each asset a Creative Commons license.

Enter The New Age of Guest Posting

Guest posting is a valuable asset when you aim at becoming active, well-known, or authoritative in any niche. If you pursue a backlinking strategy, guest posts are one of the main tactics and probably the most valuable. If don’t know what I’m talking about, the idea goes more or less like this: you have a website, social media profile, or page somewhere that you want to appear on the first page of the search engine results. To achieve that requires bulking up the page’s authority.

There are many methods to conduct SEM (search engine marketing) but it boils down to two main ones: SEO and off-page SEO. Backlinking is an off-page SEO tactic that’s about having original content spread all over the web linking back to your grand link scheme.

That’s why guest posting opportunities are highly sought after. Now, to get started with guest posting may require a lot of previous work that you must do, for the host site to trust you and publish your content. On top of that, it requires a heavy social networking hustle that takes time and effort.

A new age of guest posting simply because to have your content featured here, you don’t need to even create an account.

You needn’t bother yourself about a lot to contribute your first guest post. Some extra rules to contribute your guest post:

  1. Before posting, if it’s not too much trouble, read two or three article items on the site that is a similar kind of article you mean to contribute
  2. In the body of the article, connect to outside sources by linking. It can be your site, your online social profiles, or some other pages that you want to link to
  3. Write a copyright notice at the lower part of the article to clarify that you keep every one of the rights to the item you contribute After you post your article, return in a few days and you will see your guest post live
  4. On the off chance that there was some problem with your submission, you’ll get either an email on the off chance that you haven’t become a member yet. or a private message on this site if you had already created an account.

FAQ

Would I be able to contribute content secretly/anonymously?

You sure can, just enter some gibberish in the email field, like [email protected]. However, if there are significant issues with your submission and we don’t feel the item is ready to be distributed, at that point you concur that we will negligibly alter it to follow the site’s style before publishing it.

How is my guest post going to be compensated?

The principal reward is having a quality venue to distribute your content as pages, rather than posting it on a generalist free publishing platform.

Will my post and/or registration count if I become a member now before a prize framework for users is deployed?

Yes, indeed. When the prize framework goes live every one of your past submissions to this site, not simply enlisting and contributing, will be counted and will change over to tokens, credits, or whatever strategy we wind up deciding on to count your contributions to this site.
